Frances Strayer writes: I want to let you know about a conservation project that will benefit all of us here in Sandwich. The Lakes Region Conservation Trust (LRCT) is working to purchase and conserve a 44-acre parcel, owned by the family of the late David Leach, on Great Rock Road. I have been hiking and snowshoeing on this property and know how wonderful it is. I am posting this note in hopes that other Sandwich folks will help in the fund-raising effort to conserve this land.
Conservation of the Leach parcel will protect a scenic natural landscape, wetland complex, and critical wildlife habitat in the Red Hill River Watershed and will add to the significant amount of conserved land in this watershed, which stretches from Red Hill Pond to Lake Winnipesaukee. It will expand the LRCT’s existing 372-acre Red Hill Conservation Area that is open to the public for hiking, snowshoeing, nature observation and education. A new trail on the Leach property will be named in honor of Jocelyn Gutchess who worked to conserve this property prior to her passing last year. A scenic ridge will be named in remembrance of David Leach.
I have learned that the LRCT has commitments for over three-quarters of the $115,000 campaign goal to conserve the Leach property, including generous donations from the Conservation Commission and Quimby Trust as well as from many individuals. I hope that other Sandwich residents will contribute to this effort to add to the Town’s conserved land that will benefit us all.
