How often have we driven through town since the demise of Mocha Rizing and thought to ourselves, "How I wish there were somewhere around here to get a cup of coffee!" How excited we are that Sandwich will soon have a café in the center again. Nick and Elaine Vazzana, the new owners of what will be called the Village Green Café & Market, have been hard at work getting everything ready for a Memorial Day weekend opening. Here is what Nick says about the project: The Village Green Café & Market carries on the vision of an in-town, general market by providing a community gathering place that celebrates our people, their art, food and agricultural traditions. Primarily a coffeehouse, the enterprise aims to revitalize Sandwich’s historic district, incubating small businesses by providing an outlet for local vendors, artisans and farmers. One space devoted to an art gallery will present fine art and crafts by local artists. The Café & Market represents the rebirth of an old style of shopping. Years ago, every, town’s public market served as a central place for shoppers to purchase food and goods from multiple producers under one roof. Consumers enjoyed the freshness, variety and uniqueness of the food, art, crafts and other merchandise grown and created in their region. We contemplate selling coffee and tea and other products including baked goods, ice cream, milk, yogurt, cheese, fruit, household supplies and artwork. The café will be open seven days a week, from 6:30 AM to 3 PM weekdays, 7 to 4 on Saturdays, and 7 to 2 on Sundays. I'll see you there!
Saturday morning, May 21st was the beginning of the active season here in Sandwich. The first outdoor Farmers Market of 2016 took place in the Corner House Inn parking lot. Across the street the Sandwich Home Industries opened for the season, and around the corner the Library held a plant and bake sale. The Farmers Market was well attended by both vendors and buyers. In addition to vegetables for eating and planting, here were lots of marvelous baked goods, local eggs, handcrafted soaps and body care products, yarns and spinning supplies, artwork and other handmade items, locally roasted coffee, maple syrup, jams and jellies, bags and baguettes... the list goes on. The Sandwich Home Industries, Sandwich's historic craft store, now part of the League of NH Craftsmen, is looking beautiful inside and out, all ready for the new season. Inside it's full of stellar handmade items of all kinds. Check out the awesome chicken pillows! Around the corner the Samuel Wentworth Library offered an outdoor plant sale and an indoor bake sale. It was impossible to resist the profusion of treats! What an abundance of offerings in our little town. And it will only get better as the summer progresses. Just wait until next week when the new coffee shop, Village Green Café, opens its doors. More news on that coming soon.
Advice To The Players (ATTP) invites you to participate in the worldwide commemoration of William Shakespeare on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of his death. From Arabia to Argentina, to Prague and Queensland, Stratford-upon-Avon and Center Sandwich, the world rejoices in the marvelous gift of the works of Will Shakespeare.
Please join ATTP in celebrating the Bard of Avon, the most famous, timeless author in the English language. Four special events will be held at the Arts Center at 12 Main in Center Sandwich. Pizza and Sonnets, Thursday evening, April 21, from 6:30 until 8 PM, will feature local poet Page Coulter, who has invited middle and high school students to join her in exploring the sonnet. Experienced in helping people of all ages tap into their inner poet, she will offer exercises, and perhaps a challenge to students to embrace the beauty of language and find their voice. Students who attend should dress comfortably, and bring writing supplies. This event is limited to 12 students. To reserve a spot, please email [email protected] (and you might want to mention your favorite kind of pizza). Saturday evening, April 23, ATTP Founder Caroline Nesbitt will lead a group reading and discussion of Measure for Measure at 7:30 PM. Nesbitt says of the play, "Measure for Measure is full of ambiguity, grey areas that exist when holding hard justice against human mercy, and the way both change depending on the honesty, corruption, or whim of those with the power to wield them. The play is also an extraordinary examination of sexual politics. Altogether you have something that is as compelling and chewy today as it when it was first performed over 400 years ago." If you have your own copy of the play, please bring it with you. Light refreshments will be available by donation. Sunday, April 24, at 12:30 PM, ATTP throws a picnic/party to celebrate the Board's 452nd birthday! Bring the whole family, and please bring a basic picnic to insure that any of your family's special dietary needs are met. A sampling of Shakespearean favorites ~ meat, vegetables, fruit and beverages ~ will be on hand along with birthday cake. Games and activities. Fun facts and famous quotes. Perchance a bit of improvisational acting. It's all there! A donation of $10 to $15 per family is requested. Please email janlgoldman@juno. com to let us know how many to expect, in order to know how much food is needed. Also on Sunday afternoon, at 3:30 PM, a concert by The Silver Lake Singers, with Mary Edes, will bring to a close ATTP's celebration of Shakespeare's birthday, which is also his death day. Their music will offer a time of quiet reflection and appreciation of this great man whose insightful commentary on the human condition has stood the test of four centuries, remaining as relevant today as it was in 1616. The concert, and light refreshments, are available by donation. Advice To The Players, Sandwich's Shakespeare company, looks forward to the pleasure of your company as we celebrate. If you have questions, or need further information on any of these events, please email [email protected] or call 284-7532 Joan Merriman writes: On Saturday, February 27th The Chapman Sanctuary and Visny Woods invited Cub Scout Pack 369 from Moultonborough to join Sanctuary Coordinator Sarah Norton in the cleaning and preparing of several bird houses located on the sanctuary property in anticipation of the upcoming migration. What was initially supposed to be a snowshoe turned out to be more of a hike due to the lack of snow. This did not, however, dull these scouts’ spirits. It turned out to be a beautiful day, filled with exciting educational experiences. The scouts took delight in discovering nests from the previous year, examining the different materials the birds from the previous year used to build them. Each scout and some of the parents took turns cleaning each bird house and spraying the poles down with ammonia to prevent any hungry and curious critters from trying to build their homes or make a meal of the new occupants. The scouts were excited to discover that in a few of the houses mice had built nests, and were amazed that they could climb the poles to get in the houses. The boys also enjoyed reading several of the information boards that are located along the trails and learned about things such as what a logging brow and a stone culvert were. All in all, it was a great day. The scouts earned their community service badges had a great time on the trails with their friends and families, and even learned a few things along the way. We look forward to sharing many more outdoor experiences with these young adventurers. The Sandwich Farmers’ Market will hold its first Winter Market on Saturday, January 9, at the Benz Center, Grove Street, Center Sandwich. The market will run 9 AM to 12 noon. Nine local producers and bakers will bring you winter vegetables, freshly baked goods, homemade crafts and lots of relishes, jam and maple syrup.
The Sandwich Farmers Market grew substantially this past summer and a holiday market at the Sandwich Grange was very successful. The growing demand for locally grown and locally made food suggests that a winter market, once a month, might also succeed. “If people come and buy, the January market will encourage lots of us to grow more and better throughout the year,” said Martha Carlson of Range View Farm. “Many of us are just learning how to grow lettuce, greens and even carrots through the winter. We’ve just planted radishes for harvest in February.” The market vendors include: Sandwich Coffee Roasters with shade-grown coffees; Prodigal Brewery with beer, mustard and pretzels; Bob’s Baguettes with fresh baguettes and canvas bags; Range View Farm with winter greens, lettuce, carrots, beets, jams, maple syrup; Booty Farm with garlic, cornmeal, and relish; Tanna Farm with dry beans, pop corn, potatoes, squash, hats and mittens, eggs and blueberry coffee cake; Anne Made with scones, cookies, bread and muffins; Chestnut Meadow Farm with eggs, tomatoes, potatoes, garlic and onions; and Mountain Breeze Farm with maple syrup, pork and beef. Diane Johnson writes: Christmas in the Village Weekend is the first full weekend in December (5 & 6).
Crafters, bakers, and organizations will be selling goods at the school, the Sandwich Home Industries, the Sandwich Historical Society, the Grange and many shops and studios throughout town. A Christmas Tree lighting, carols, music, hot food, stories, skits, horse-drawn carriage rides, Santa, and more are being planned. Are there folks interested in helping to decorate homes and buildings in the village? Maybe someone has a special display they would like to share in a storefront or someplace else. How about a gingerbread house contest? You let me (Diane Johnson) know what you would like to do and the times you hope to do it. If you plan it, I will help you publicize it. Many small events and things combined into one weekend will make our quaint town a festive and joyful destination. Christmas in the Village is a celebration of early winter, holidays, hospitality, etc. so if your idea relates to Hanukkah or some other seasonal event, that's great. If you would like to be added to the contact list and/or do something special that weekend, please email [email protected] by November 14 if possible. Efforts are being made to include all the events happening that weekend on one calendar and map. Individuals, businesses, and organizations who are selling things are asked to contribute $25 each (payable to Sandwich Craftsmen) to help share the costs of signs, posters, printing, and other advertising. Assistance distributing posters and other print materials as well as putting out signs (and picking them up afterwards) is greatly appreciated. No one is receiving pay for any of this. The fee is used to share and cover costs. Any monies remaining after bills are paid will be rolled over to 2016. If you have events to publicize or input or questions on seasonal activities (any time including the first weekend of December) or if you need help with scheduling so that things don't overlap, I can assist and I will try to put you in touch with the people and/or organizations running various activities. For more information please contact Diane Johnson at 284-7168 (call or text as this is a cellphone) or email [email protected]. Come to Center Sandwich on Halloween night for spooky displays in the village and to trick or treat for candy. Expect Advice To The Players to be involved with some sort of theatrical haunting. View Joan Cook's Witch Collection at the Grange.
Kitty Greene writes: Are you a Halloween fan who lives outside the village and suffers from depression every year because no one ever stops by your house? Do you buy candy every year “just in case," but end up eating it all on your own? Have I got a solution for you! Get some family and/or friends together and create a haunted vignette in the village! Drop off your candy at the Town Hall where it will be vigorously tested by quality control then distributed to the houses around town! If you are interested in “haunting" contact me to help coordinate festivities in the village. If you live in the village, let me know if you are going to be "haunting" or would like someone to use your yard/porch to “haunt." Many thanks, Kitty Greene ~ 284-6897 Sandwich Players The 105th Grand Street Parade steps off at 1:00 PM on Sunday, October 11. The theme of the Parade this year is Early American Transportation. Viewing the parade is not only fun, but easy, as you can watch it along its route as you stroll through the historic village of Center Sandwich, or as it continues on its way through the Fairgrounds. Complete with bands, animals, fire engines, and floats, the Grand Street Parade is not to be missed this year! There are several new and exciting features scheduled to be included in the Parade this year, all having to do with Early American Transportation. Sandwich’s own beautiful Concord Coach, built in 1850 and still in use, will be drawn by two Percheron horses with Bruce Locke at the reigns, and transporting the Arthur Heard family. While you are enjoying the Fair be sure to make your way to a viewing spot along the Parade’s route. See you Sunday afternoon at the Grand Street Parade!
Please enjoy the photos below of the Sandwich Coach in Sandwich Fair parades of years past. Click on individual photos for a better view. Diane Johnson writes: The Sandwich Fair will celebrate its 105th consecutive fair beginning Friday evening.
Fairgoers should have a wonderful weekend with lots to do; but you don’t have to be just a spectator. Have you made a quilt, a hooked rug, a basket. a piece of art or other fine craft? Perhaps you made some amazing preserves, or the best maple syrup ever? What about a great photo Do you have a baked good recipe that you thing might be a blue ribbon winner? What about decorating a cake? Do you have the biggest zucchini ever or a giant pumpkin? Maybe you have some uniquely shaped vegetables that would be perfect for the vegetable art competition. Well if you think you have something worth sharing and showing off, you can still enter it in the Sandwich Fair. To enter an item into one of the contests in the exhibit halls, go to www.thesandwichfair.com and download an entry form. Complete one form for each department you enter (rules and regulations are in the Exhibitors Handbook and on the website). Bring your form and item(s) to the Hodge Building on the Sandwich Fairgrounds between 3 and 8 pm on Friday evening, October 9. There will be a table in the middle of the Hodge Building where you can have an exhibitor number assigned and the volunteers will direct you to the appropriate department chairs who will make sure your forms are complete and that each entry is labeled and received. Some folks may have already downloaded forms and received an exhibitor number via mail, e-mail, or FAX (603-284-7216); those folks can just go to the individual departments. No handbook or computer? No problem. Everything you need to enter item will be available in the Hodge Building. After you have made your entries, walk over to the midway for Friday Night rides and fair food. No admission is charged on Friday night and you can ride the rides from 4-9 pm with a ride bracelet which can be purchased from Gillette Shows in the midway for $20. Friday night the exhibit halls and the animal barns will be closed to the public. There are no events going on Friday night—just rides, food, and fun! All items in the Exhibit Halls will be judged between 8 PM Friday night and 9 AM Saturday morning when the exhibit halls open to the public. All entries must stay on display until Monday, October 12 at 5 PM. Pick-up of exhibits is Monday from 5-6:30 PM. Please note vehicles will not be allowed on the fairgrounds until 6 PM on Monday. Make sure to bring a camera and take lots of photos for the Annual Sandwich Fair Photo Contest (A personal request from me, Diane Johnson : Please don’t upload and try to send your photos to all your friends from the fairgrounds during the Fair. All the cellphone use overloads the cell towers and cell service becomes very slow or impossible for everyone. For those of us who us who depend on wireless service, or for people needing to make an emergency phone call on a cellphone, this can be an issue.) Have fun at the Fair! Please note that dogs/pets are not allowed on the Fairgrounds so please don’t bring them and don’t lock them up in the car. Properly marked/documented Service Dogs/animals are allowed. The official opening of the Sandwich Fair will be at 8 AM on Saturday, October 10. The fair committee invites people to gather at the flagpole just inside the gate at the top of the Squam Lake Road Parking lot for an opening ceremony. On Saturday, October 10th gates are open from 8 AM until dusk, Sunday, October 11th, 8 AM until dusk and Monday 8am until 5 PM. A ride special is available in the midway on Saturday from 9-2 when you can purchase a bracelet which allows the wearer unlimited rides for $20. Please remember that we are now in the fall season and that temperatures fluctuate quite a bit from hour to hour. Wear layers and plan ahead for a lot of fun. Admission is $10 for adults (13 and over), 8-12 year olds are $3, 7 and under are free. On Monday only seniors 60 and older are $4. |
